STAINED-GLASS PROJECT INTRODUCTION BY REV MIAK SIEW
STAINED-GLASS PROJECT LAUNCH ON EASTER SUNDAY SERVICE
1. Draw your artwork on a piece of paper first as it is easier to edit if need be. You may also choose to print out designs completed on a computer.
Note: Make sure your design is within the 14cm x 14cm square.
2. Place the plastic sheet on top of your completed artwork / designs with the frosted side facing up for tracing. The smooth side of the plastic sheet should be facing down.
Get ready your masking or scotch tape and scissors.
3. Tape the 4 corners with masking or scotch tape to hold it in place.
This is to prevent the plastic sheet from moving or shifting when you rotate the tile during tracing and colouring.
4. Draw or colour on the frosted side. The ink will smudge so work with the lighter colours first. Leave the black or outlines (if any) last.
Tips: You will have more pen control and smoother lines using light pressure.
5. Leave the artwork to dry completely. Keep it away from water and alcohol.
Submit your completed physical tile by dropping it into the box near the church entrance by 19th December 2021. Then email your story together with a photo of your tile (so we can match the tiles with the correct story) to witnessproject@freecomchurch.org.
If you prefer to use initials, a nickname or stay anonymous for your story on our website gallery, please let us know in your email. Thank you!
Dear friends,
You may have heard about the Stained Glass Project we launched last week. For many of us, Art and Craft isn’t our thing. My mom used to do most of the work making lanterns for Mid-Autumn festival, and I almost always colour outside of the lines. But perfection isn’t what we are trying to get at in this project. It is about using the stained glass as a way to tell our stories. And when we put everything together, we see the tapestry of all of stories.
Yesterday, I was reading Fr James Martin’s book (still a few more chapters to go) Learning to Pray. He talked about Ignatian Contemplation, where we use our imagination to place ourselves in a scene with Jesus. I thought about doing that with a story from the Bible. As I was laying in bed, and thinking about a verse, the burning bush came to mind.
I started thinking of the colors of the burning bush. Orange, red, yellow. I started to think about shapes. And then I wondered – are there any green leaves on the bush?
So began the process of making my tile.
One of our friends Mark Argent said he is going to try a different method – he talked about “dropping glass paint into glass paint thinner and letting it run.” I am not so sure if the thinner is going to react with the plastic, but that’s an idea.
This Sunday, from 1pm to 3pm, and during the prayer meeting next Wednesday, I will lead folks through an adapted version of Ignatian Contemplation and I hope it will inspire folks who are in the meeting with ideas how to tell their story through their stained “glass” tile.
I hope that you can think about how to invite your cell group mates, as well as others, to join this project. Do come to church to pick up some tiles to distribute to your cell groups, and for yourself and let us know what other ideas you may have.
