Do we hear only what we want to hear, and not what we need to hear?
I have heard quite often – “I don’t feel God around anymore,” or “I don’t feel God here.” I find that rather strange because, to me, God is omnipresent. The question is whether we have a fixed idea of how God is to be present. Just like the “Invisible Gorilla Experiment” (see http://www.theinvisiblegorilla.com/gorilla_experiment.html ), we often see things selectively.
One of the ways to train ourselves to be open to seeing God all around is through spiritual practices.
I spoke about the Ignatian Examen last Sunday, and how Fr Mark E. Thibodeaux’s book “Reimagining the Ignatian Examen” offers variations of this ancient spiritual practice. Those interested in ordering the book can contact me at miak.siew@freecomchurch.org. I would make an order next week from Amazon – it costs about USD8.50.
Spiritual growth comes through effort. Not by just being somewhere spiritual.
