Dear siblings,
Community, literally, is our middle name. But what does community entail? What kind of community do we envision ourselves to be? How do we live up to be that community?
Anchored in Jesus’ teachings, Rev Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of the beloved community where everyone is cared for, absent of poverty, hunger, and hate. The beloved community is an ideal society where everyone’s physical and spiritual needs were met and where genuine interpersonal and intergroup relatedness is achieved. It meant the kingdom of God at a concrete level, on earth, toward which the movement was supposed to struggle.
Rev Martin Luther King Jr said. “The end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the Beloved Community. It is this type of spirit and this type of love that can transform opponents into friends. It is this type of understanding goodwill that will transform the deep gloom of the old age into the exuberant gladness of the new age. It is this love which will bring about miracles in the hearts of men.”
How do our story of God and us connect with this beloved community? What is God inviting us to be?

Shalom,
